On Rainbow River

The Rainbow River is a spring-fed river in Dunnellon, in the southwest corner of Marion County, Florida. Its source is Rainbow Springs, a first-magnitude spring that ranks fourth in the state for volume of discharge. The spring is not a single vent but many, and together they release 400 to 600 million gallons of water a day at a steady 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The river winds 5.7 miles and joins the Withlacoochee River at Dunnellon. The Withlacoochee then empties into the Gulf at Withlacoochee Bay near Yankeetown. The river was designated a Registered Natural Landmark in 1972, an aquatic preserve in 1986 and an Outstanding Florida Water in 1987. The Rainbow Springs Aquatic Preserve covers 164 acres.
