On Blue Earth River

The Blue Earth River is a 108-mile tributary of the Minnesota River in southern Minnesota. It begins at the confluence of its West and Middle branches about five miles north of Elmore in Faribault County, then winds north past the cities of Blue Earth, Winnebago and Vernon Center to Mankato, where it enters the Minnesota River. The Watonwan and Le Sueur rivers join it in its lower reach. By volume it is the Minnesota River's largest tributary, carrying 46% of the flow at the confluence. Its basin covers 3,486 square miles of mostly agricultural land. It is named for bluish-green clay that once lined its banks. More about Blue Earth River.
