On Bear Island Lake

Bear Island Lake is a natural glacial lake in St. Louis County, Minnesota, near Babbitt and Rothman and roughly 10 to 15 miles southwest of Ely. It covers about 2,351 acres, measures about 4 miles long by 2 miles wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 62 feet. The lake has 23 islands. The Beaver River is its main inlet. Its outlet is the Bear Island River, where an old dam limits fish movement when the water is low. About two-thirds of the shoreline is state and national forest, including Bear Island State Forest, with resorts on parts of the rest. The water is brown and bog-stained, with about 7 feet of visibility, and most of the shoreline bottom is rubble, boulder and gravel. More about Bear Island Lake.
