On Bass River
Bass River is a tidal estuary on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It forms the town line between Yarmouth and Dennis. At its widest, southernmost point it opens into Nantucket Sound, between Smugglers Beach on the Yarmouth side and West Dennis Beach on the Dennis side. A marsh island near the mouth splits the river into the main channel and the Old Field Channel. North of the Route 28 bridge the river winds about five more miles inland to Follins Pond, and it continues as a brook up to Mill Pond. It is the largest river crossed by the Mid-Cape Highway (Route 6), and it was once considered a possible route for a canal across Cape Cod. Dennis's coastal plan describes it as a glacial meltwater furrow in the Harwich Outwash Plain. More about Bass River.
