On Artichoke Lake

Artichoke Lake is a shallow prairie lake in Big Stone and Swift counties in western Minnesota, about 15 miles east of Ortonville. The Minnesota DNR lists it at 1,971 acres, with a maximum depth of 15 feet and 21 miles of shoreline. A Minnesota Pollution Control Agency assessment notes that its size and depth have changed a great deal since the 1940s. Because it is so shallow, the lake mixes whenever the wind blows. It lies in the Pomme de Terre River watershed, and farmland runs close to most of the shore, which has little development. The name probably translates a Native American name for the Jerusalem artichokes once harvested there for food. More about Artichoke Lake.
