On Aroostook River

The Aroostook River is a 112-mile tributary of the Saint John River in Maine and New Brunswick, and its basin is the largest sub-drainage of the Saint John. It rises at the confluence of Millinocket and Munsungan streams in northern Penobscot County, runs through Ashland, passes north of Presque Isle and east of Caribou, and joins the Saint John at Aroostook, New Brunswick, after crossing the border at Fort Fairfield. At Caribou it is impounded by the Caribou Development of the Aroostook River Hydroelectric Project (FERC No. 2367), licensed to Aroostook Power, Inc. Ice-dam floods occur relatively often.
