On Allagash River
The Allagash River is a tributary of the Saint John River in the Maine North Woods. It runs about 65 miles through remote wilderness north of Mount Katahdin. The river leaves Churchill Lake at Churchill Depot in northern Piscataquis County and flows generally northeast through a chain of natural lakes, including Umsaskis Lake, Long Lake and Round Pond. It joins the Saint John at the town of Allagash, near the New Brunswick border. Its name comes from an Abenaki word meaning "bark stream." Dams built in the 1840s turned the water of Allagash, Chamberlain and Telos lakes into the East Branch of the Penobscot River so that logs could be floated south. Today Lock Dam sends some water from Chamberlain Lake back into Eagle Lake and then down the Allagash. Churchill Dam, first a wooden dam and later replaced in concrete, stands at the outlet of Churchill Lake. At a USGS gauge 3 miles above the mouth, the river drains 1,479 square miles and averages 1,967 cubic feet per second. More about Allagash River.
