On Albert Lea Lake

Albert Lea Lake is a shallow lake of about 2,600 acres at Albert Lea in Freeborn County, in south-central Minnesota a few miles from the Iowa border. It is where the Shell Rock River begins. The river flows 113 miles into Iowa and joins the Cedar River there. The lake draws thousands of waterfowl during the spring and fall migrations, and eagles nest on it year-round. The outlet at the south end of the lake, off Freeborn County Road 19, was the more-than-90-year-old Juglans dam. The Shell Rock River Watershed District replaced it with a fixed-crest dam built as a rock-arch rapids, with a water management structure and an electric fish barrier. The new dam was dedicated in June 2015 and is meant to keep carp and other bottom-feeding fish, including invasive species, out of the lake. More about Albert Lea Lake.
